The market has split: imperial-grade jadeite set a decade record in Hong Kong in May while mid-grade prices fell under livestream selling, and the only legal source is a sanctioned military enterprise.1High

Imperial-grade jadeite is held for decades and surfaces at Hong Kong sales a few times a year; the Hutton-Mdivani necklace record of 2014 stood until this May and was not beaten. Mid-grade jadeite bought at retail in the last five years has fallen under livestream selling and has no resale route at all.2 11DerivedMed

Since last update

First entry. Myanmar's military held its first Gems Emporium outside the country, in Ruili, China, on 22 July 2026, offering 500 tonnes of rough; the 61st domestic Emporium ran to 17 October. The Christie's Hong Kong record necklace in May (HK$200.2 m) and falling mid-tier prices define the year.123

Why Σ4

There is no reference price and no exchange; each piece is valued by eye and laboratory report against a thin set of Hong Kong auction results. Exit is through a handful of Hong Kong sales a year or dealers in a market Western buyers cannot read. Treatment fraud is endemic, Western sanctions on the sole producer make import and resale of recent material legally uncertain, and almost all value rests on a cultural premium confined to one buyer base.

The most valuable gem market the West does not read. Jadeite from one valley in northern Myanmar is cut, sold and worn almost entirely in greater China, priced by a vocabulary of colour, texture and translucency that has no Western equivalent, and traded through a state enterprise that the United States, United Kingdom and European Union have sanctioned since 2021. This page covers what jade is, where it comes from and who controls it, how price is formed at the top and the bottom, the treatment and sanctions questions, and what to watch. No prices are carried as live values.

ITwo stones, one word

Jadeite is the market; nephrite is the history.

"Jade" covers two minerals. Nephrite, the softer stone of Chinese antiquity, is worked in Hetian white and spinach green and prized in archaic and imperial carvings, where value is archaeological and art-historical. Jadeite, harder and capable of vivid translucent green, reached China from Burma only in the late eighteenth century and is the stone of the modern jewellery market: bangles, bead necklaces, cabochons and carvings. This page rates jadeite jewellery; antique nephrite belongs with Chinese works of art.

Grade (trade usage)CharacterIndicative range, 2026
ImperialSaturated even emerald green, high translucency, fine texture$100,000 to several million per piece; six and seven figures at auction67
Icy / glass ("bing")Near-colourless, water-like clarity$1,500–15,000 retail6
Lavender, fine apple greenRare colours at good texture$1,000–30,0007
CommercialOpaque, mottled green or white$50–400; the bulk of pieces by number67
Treated (Type B, C, B+C)Bleached, polymer-impregnated or dyed$5–50; worthless as a store of value7

Ranges are dealer price guides, not a measured series. Low

The distribution is the finding. A US regional auctioneer reports a median of $400 across 642 jade lots, more than half under $500, against HK$170 m hammer for one necklace in Hong Kong. There is no middle: value is concentrated in a few thousand pieces worldwide, and the rest is ornament. High8

IISupply: Hpakant and the Emporium

One valley, one enterprise, two routes to China.

Gem jadeite comes from the Hpakant mines in Kachin State, northern Myanmar. Licensing, royalties and formal sales run through Myanma Gems Enterprise (MGE), a state body under the Ministry of Natural Resources, which holds the annual Gems Emporium in Naypyitaw where rough is sold by sealed tender to licensed merchants. The UN fact-finding mission of 2019 found two military conglomerates, MEHL and MEC, dominant in the sector; MGE, MEHL and MEC have all been sanctioned by the US, UK and EU since 2021.159 High

Hpakant is also one of the most dangerous workplaces on earth: landslides at the waste dumps killed more than 170 people in July 2020 and dozens in each year since. Mining has continued through the civil war under military and, in places, Kachin Independence Army control. A holder of recent material cannot know which. High5

Beneath the auction tier, the Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of China's 2025 report found top-grade prices rising while mid- and lower-grade prices held or eased; dealer guides put the top tier up around 20% in a year and the mid-tier down under pressure from livestream selling, which has brought price transparency to everything below investment grade. Hong Kong fair dealers report high-end buyers refusing current asking prices. The pattern is the same as art's: the apex detaches, the middle thins.674 Med

IVTreatment, grading and sanctions

Three questions a Western holder cannot answer alone.

QuestionProblemControl
Is it treated?Acid bleaching and polymer impregnation (Type B) or dye (Type C) make poor jadeite look fine; the difference in price is 5× to 100×; detection by eye is unreliableLaboratory report: Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory, NGTC (China), GIA; infrared spectroscopy identifies polymer47
What grade is it?No agreed grading scale; "imperial", "icy", "old mine" are trade terms with no definitions; colour, texture and translucency judged by eye in Cantonese and Mandarin vocabulariesComparables from Hong Kong auctions; a specialist dealer; the HKJSL "Fei Cui" standard describes species and treatment, not quality
Can it be legally sold?US JADE Act (2008) and post-2021 OFAC designation of MGE; UK and EU sanctions; import of Burmese-origin jadeite into the US restricted and any dealing traceable to the Emporium potentially prohibitedPre-2008 or pre-2021 provenance documents; legal advice; Hong Kong and mainland markets unaffected95
Who will buy it?Demand is almost entirely Chinese; Western auction houses offer jade in Hong Kong, not New York or GenevaConsign to Hong Kong; accept a selling cycle of months to years4
Parallel to coloured gemstones: Burmese ruby carries the same sanctions question and the same "no such thing as ethically sourced" campaign. The difference is the buyer. A Mogok ruby has a Geneva market that will take it with pre-2021 paperwork; imperial jadeite has no market outside the Chinese world at all. Hyp9
