Holding horizon

Transaction costs of 20% or more round-trip and running costs of several per cent a year make anything under five years a losing hold unless the model is re-rated. Collectors describe holding periods of a decade or more; the 2026 Monterey results show value migrating by buyer cohort, so the horizon that matters is a generation.EstimateMed

RoutesConsignment to a live auction (RM Sotheby's, Gooding, Bonhams, Broad Arrow) on a fixed calendar; online auction (Bring a Trailer, Collecting Cars) for sub-$500k cars; dealer purchase or brokered private sale; sealed-bid sales for the rarest cars.14 1High ActivityMonterey week 2026 grossed a record $755.6 m across five houses with eleven eight-figure lots; the rest of the year is a dozen comparable sales worldwide. Below the top, online platforms list thousands of cars a month but each model trades a handful of times a year.1 4 5ReportedMed CostRM Sotheby's charges the seller 10% of hammer and the buyer 12% to $250,000 and 10% above in the US (15%/12.5% plus VAT in Europe); the buyer's premium comes out of what the seller can achieve. Transport, detailing, pre-sale mechanical work and reserve negotiation sit on top; a withdrawn car still pays fees.14High TimeConsignment closes six to twelve weeks before the sale; sale proceeds are paid within about 30 business days of settlement. From decision to cash, three to six months at a major house; a dealer sale is faster at a wider discount.14ReportedMed

Why Σ3

Auction results give periodic price points for top models; most cars lack comparables. Storage, insurance and maintenance are costly and specialised. Exit through scheduled auctions takes months.

A collector market that set an all-time auction record in August 2026, $756 million in one California week, while the cars that built the hobby quietly went unsold. The money moved to modern Ferraris, McLarens and Bugattis; the Duesenbergs and 300 SLs held; the 1950s bread-and-butter classics did not. This page is an overview: the auction calendar and its record book, the generational rotation, the indices that measure it, the marques that matter and the provenance economics underneath. No prices are carried as live values.

Discrepancy logged: the 2026 total is reported as $755.6 m (Hagerty, through Saturday), $747.9 m (Motorious, running tally to 15 August) and $718.3 m excluding the $40 m Ferrari Luce sale (Magneto, citing Hagerty). Hagerty's pre-sale forecast had been $470–500 m. The headline figure is used; the exclusion of a new car sold at a classic auction is a legitimate alternative reading.1 4 9 3 High

Mecum's sell-through, lowest of the week, on c.$104 m; volume and sell-through flat overall High4

The money came from the cars getting more expensive, not from more cars selling: volume and sell-through were flat, and the increase was carried by an unusually deep bench of seven- and eight-figure consignments.4 Beneath the headline, 1950s volume classics, the most numerous consignments, underperformed, and a period-wrecked 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione without its original engine brought $8.09 m, below the Hagerty Price Guide's fair-condition value.1 4 High

Some dealers and specialists argue that supercar prices are unsustainable and defy traditional collecting metrics, race history, scarcity, enduring value, global appeal, while the buyers are tech wealth and a younger cohort that did not grow up with the cars the last generation collected.3 Med

Diamond parallel: the Ferrari allocation system, buy the halo car at auction to strengthen your position for the next factory allocation, is a sight system with the customers bidding for future boxes. It makes auction prices partly a fee for access, which is why they can exceed any valuation built on the object alone. When allocation stops mattering, so does that premium. Hyp

VProvenance economics

The car is the chassis number; the price is the file.

The Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for €135 m because it is one of two, was owned by its maker since 1955, and carries an engineer's name and a Nürburgring anecdote; the 250 GT SWB that sold below guide in 2026 was the same model family as cars that make eight figures, minus its original engine and a race history.2 4 Matching numbers, continuous ownership, competition record and factory documentation are the four variables that separate a $1 m car from a $50 m one of the same type, and none can be verified by looking at the car. Med

Provenance elementEffectVerification
Matching numbers (chassis, engine, gearbox, body)Missing original engine sent a 250 GT SWB below fair-condition guide value4Factory build sheets; marque registries (Ferrari Classiche certification)
Competition historyThe 250 GTO and Daytona Coupé premiums rest on it7Period entry lists, photographs, chassis-specific histories
Ownership chainSingle-owner-from-new or maker-owned cars set records2Title documents; auction-house due diligence
Originality versus restorationConcours-winning restoration did not save a Bentley R-Type from a sliding segment4Marque expert inspection; the auction condition report
Compliance reading: a collector car is a high-value, portable, internationally tradeable asset with opaque private-sale pricing and a documentary provenance chain, the same profile as a rough parcel or a painting. The controls are the same: verify the chassis against the maker's records, verify the seller against the title, and treat a price far above the guide with the same suspicion as one far below. Hyp
