Holding horizon

Dealers and platforms cite a five- to ten-year hold for references expected to appreciate; anything shorter is exposed to the dealer spread on both legs. The 2022–24 bust showed the horizon can be dictated by the cycle: a watch bought at the 2022 peak is still under water in 2026 for most references.EstimateMed

RoutesSale to a dealer for an immediate offer; consignment to a dealer or platform; listing on a marketplace such as Chrono24 (over 500,000 listings, buyers in 150 countries); auction at Phillips, Sotheby's, Christie's or Antiquorum for rare references.16 17High ActivityThe pre-owned market turned over about $17 bn in 2025, Rolex alone $5.7 bn. On Chrono24 a correctly priced listing typically sells in two to eight weeks; instant-offer dealers pay in one to five days at 70–85% of retail.17ReportedMed CostPrivate marketplace sale 6.5% commission; platform consignment 13–19%; dealer buy-in priced at a discount of 15–30% to retail; auction seller's commission negotiable plus a buyer's premium of 25%+ that caps the hammer. Service history and box-and-papers move the price by more than the fee.16 17High TimeDealer sale: days, payout one to three business days after receipt. Marketplace: weeks to sell, then escrow release about seven days after delivery. Auction: consignment deadlines run two to four months ahead of sale, payment about 35 days after.16 17 18ReportedMed

Since last update

Swiss watch exports rose 9.1% in August to CHF 1.79bn, the fourth straight monthly gain, turning the 12-month average positive for the first time in two years; year to date +1.7%. The US, still the largest market, fell 19.4%; the UK (+46%) and China (+16%) led. France’s +113% likely reflects logistics routing, per FH.1415

Why Σ3

Secondary prices are visible through auction results and dealer platforms. Exit within weeks is possible for leading references, slower for others. Custody is simple; authentication and service history decide value.

A CHF 25 billion export industry in which four privately owned brands take half the value, the ultra-high end is the only growing segment, and a secondary market of $17 billion has just finished a three-year correction from its March 2022 peak. This page covers the primary market, concentration, the pre-owned market and its indices, and the structural shift of the trade from retail to resale. No prices or index levels are carried as live values.

The FH expected 2026 "at best" to remain steady, with the US improving after a 19.2% December rise and China not expected to recover quickly; upstream suppliers were described as under particular pressure.1 January 2026 showed value −3.6% on units +2.0%, a market clearing at lower average value, with the caveat that January is the most volatile month.2 High

Discrepancy logged: CHF 24.4 bn (wristwatches) and CHF 25.6 bn (all watchmaking exports) are both FH figures for 2025 and both fell 1.7%; commentary that mixes them is not an error, only a scope difference.1 2

The structural facts behind the shares: watches above CHF 50,000 were 37% of export value and 89% of growth on 1.4% of units, while accessible luxury is "under pressure" and the middle tier is compressing.4 5 Rolex is reported to have managed supply downward again in 2025; Patek Philippe rolled back some US prices by up to c.8% after tariff and currency moves.2 Med

Diamond parallel: the sports-steel allocation system, waiting lists at authorised dealers, the Nautilus 5711 trading at multiples of retail, is a sight system run by the brand rather than by a cartel. Rolex's 2023 purchase of Bucherer put the producer inside its own retail and pre-owned channel, the equivalent of a rough producer buying the bourse. Hyp

A boom, a bust and a first year of stabilisation.

The correction was a supply story: dealers and individual investors unloaded inventory from mid-2022, and total available inventory for the big three remained far above 2021 levels into 2024.7 8 Morgan Stanley's long-run view was that if the value-retaining brands gradually meet primary demand, most models could trade near or below retail, a view the 2025 stabilisation has tested but not disproved.8 Patek Philippe's Nautilus was reported up 17.2% year on year in Q1 2026, led by the steel 5711/1A.11 Med

Note on data: WatchCharts indices are built from advertised and sold secondary prices, which sit well above what dealers pay to buy. They measure the ask side of the market, not liquidation value.6

Secondary sales are forecast by one industry analyst to surpass primary sales by 2033.13 Low The more defensible statement is that the two markets are now run by the same actors: brands own retailers, retailers own resale platforms, and auction houses trade the same references as the dealers.3 12
