Since last update

Spot ~$4,171 on 19 Oct, up about 1% since 5 Oct and within a $4,080–4,200 range for the month. The hot September CPI print on 14 Oct knocked gold to ~$4,080 intraday; it recovered to ~$4,183 the next day as Treasury yields retreated from their highest level since 2002.2526 Markets now price roughly an 85% chance the Fed holds at 3.75–4.00% on 28 Oct, with a hike pushed to December; the "possible October hike" of early October has faded.27 The PBoC added 23 t in September per the World Gold Council (21 t per Wind Info), its largest month since October 2023 and 103 t year to date; a secondary report puts global central-bank buying in September near 63 t, unconfirmed by the WGC at this update.28

Why Σ1

The LBMA Gold Price, set twice daily, deep spot and ETF markets, and allocated vault custody make gold the reference institutional holding. Exit takes days at low cost. Doré origin aside, title and transfer are standardised.

The record print is reported as $5,602.22 on 28 January 2026 by one dealer source and $5,597.23 on 29 January by another; the difference is intraday versus close and is immaterial to the analysis.7 The metal then retraced through 2026 as rate expectations shifted; the LBMA average for Q2 2026 was $4,506, still 37% above the same quarter of 2025.4

Q3 2026, recorded October. The metal closed July below $4,100, rallied to $4,650–4,700 in August on record ETF buying and FX-intervention worries, and ended that month at $4,563 per the WGC (State Street's monitor says "near $4,400"; both retained).2433 September reversed it: the LBMA PM price fell 8.5% in USD, the steepest monthly loss of the cycle, as the US 10-year reached about 5.35% intraday, its highest since 2002, and COMEX net longs were cut by 100 t to 654 t.2933 Spot was roughly $4,140 by 5 October, some 26% below the January record.1819 The two drivers named below pulled in opposite directions within a single quarter. High

October to date, recorded 19 October. The metal has held a $4,080–4,200 range. A hot September CPI on 14 October produced a one-day fall to about $4,080 and a full recovery the next day; markets now price a Fed hold on 28 October with a hike deferred to December.252627 That ETF buying continued through the September sell-off (Section IV) while futures positions were liquidated is the notable divergence: the holders of physical-backed vehicles did not sell into the yield shock. Med

The short-run driver is monetary: non-yielding bullion is mechanically penalised when real yields rise and rewarded when they fall. The structural driver is the official sector (Section III), which has continued to buy through both halves of the cycle. Reading the two apart is the core analytical task for this market.

The recycling anomaly

Scrap normally responds to price. In 2025 it rose only 3% against a 44% price increase because behaviour diverged by region: developed markets (US, Europe, Japan) sold, while India, the Middle East and South-East Asia held back; among emerging markets only China increased recycling.1 Total above-ground stock is estimated at 219,891 t, the true reserve, since gold is not consumed.13

Correction, 19 Oct 2026. The previous version of this page logged a discrepancy between a Q1 figure of 244 t and a "revised 57 t", and offered a reconciliation. The WGC's own Q2 tables, now checked, show that the WGC itself revised Q1 2026 central-bank demand from 244 t to 57 t, with 187 t reclassified by Metals Focus from official-sector to OTC demand after reassessing unreported purchases.31 The earlier reconciliation was wrong and is withdrawn. The quarterly series is now High. The lesson stands: the WGC's quarterly estimates include unreported buying and are revised; the monthly "reported" series (39 t in August) counts only disclosed purchases. The two are not comparable and this page labels which is which.
A secondary report citing FT and preliminary WGC data put global central-bank purchases in September at about 63 t, the most since November 2024.28 The same figure is the PBoC's own Q3 total, and the WGC had not published a September global figure at this update; the 63 t global number is therefore carried as Low until confirmed.

Buyer breadth is the structural change: Kazakhstan set an annual record, Brazil returned after four years, and Guatemala, Indonesia and Malaysia entered or re-entered.6 Net sellers in mid-2026 were Russia and Turkey;3 in July Russia sold 6 t, with Turkey, Jordan and Uzbekistan at 1 t each.21 Reported purchases of 170 t through August run behind 2025, and H1 estimated demand of 345 t was the weakest since 2022; the c.850 t full-year forecast now requires a second half above 500 t. Standard Chartered trimmed its official-sector forecast by just over 100 t after the Q1 revision.31 The Central Bank of the UAE is described as actively diversifying its reserve mix, but no tonnage is disclosed in the sources reviewed.6 Low

The Q2 2026 composition is instructive for jewellery businesses: US-listed ETFs recorded sharp, quarter-end-concentrated outflows; bar and coin demand rose year on year but moderated from an elevated Q1; jewellery demand stayed subdued in volume as affordability collapsed.3 This is the same input-cost inversion flagged in the lab-grown diamonds page, the metal setting is now a larger share of a finished piece's cost than the stone in many mass-market categories. August reversal. Global gold ETFs took in US$18bn in August, the second-largest monthly inflow on record, led by Europe and North America; holdings rose 121 t to a record 4,189 t.23 US-listed funds alone added $7.9bn, erasing most of their March–June redemptions.24 September held. Despite the 8.5% price fall, global gold ETFs attracted a further US$10bn in September, taking Q3 inflows to a record US$31bn; holdings rose 67 t to a record 4,256 t while AUM fell 7% to US$574bn on price. All regions saw inflows; UK-listed funds had their strongest quarter on record (US$7.5bn) and overtook China as the largest country source year to date, and US-listed funds took in US$3.7bn during the sell-off.2924 Indian funds added US$496mn, nearly double August, as the Nifty fell.29 The pattern, ETF accumulation against futures liquidation, is the one to watch into Q4. Sourcing integrity, the MLRO view

The structural loophole is origin attribution: gold is treated as originating where it enters the international market, not where it was mined.16 Dubai refinery capacities of 50–350 t per plant give ample throughput for artisanal doré from Sudan, the Sahel and the Great Lakes, which is why the 2023 due-diligence rules and the 2024 suspensions matter reputationally.16 DMCC's responsible-sourcing rules align with OECD guidance and require enhanced declarations for conflict-affected and high-risk areas such as Mali.17 Med

Analytical parallel: the Kimberley Process has the same origin-laundering weakness, certification attaches to the parcel at first export, not to the mine. The gold trade's answer (LBMA Good Delivery plus refinery-level audits) is closer to what the diamond industry is attempting with source-verification programmes. Both regimes are only as good as the audit of the first-mile aggregator. Hyp
